Behind the
Story
I started writing this story for my "niece" (my cousin's daughter) after she asked to read my first published novel. I told her that book was too grown up for her (she was 12 at the time) but it was so sweet of her to even ask to read it, that I offered to write a story just for her. When I asked what sorts of things she liked to read, she said, "Dragons and fairies." Oof. Alright. In we go. middle grade fantasy was not my preferred wheelhouse, but a deal's a deal.
At the time, my niece had some difficult decisions to make, evoking a lot of big feelings for someone her age. So that is what I decided to base this story on - her life, how to navigate big choices and big feelings, but set in a fantasy world.
This story was written from a place of love for an incredibly kind, sweet, thoughtful, talented niece. I am so proud of the young person she is.
